He works to spread education and awareness on issues surrounding mental health and substance abuse as well as help families navigate the difficult waters of getting a loved one help. Howard has spent the past 8 years working with young adults and their families, being a support during times of crisis.

Steve ran a successful studio and gallery space, worked on television sets, and has been involved in the city’s creative culture for years before his journey with New Life. He has been around highly structured sober livings for the last 6 years committed to self-improvement and all others who come into a process like New Life. In the early 1990s, many families of teenagers and young men approached Answer House to help address their son’s addictions. At the time, long-term, sober living resident services for teens and young men in Los Angeles were unavailable.

A like-minded support group is essential for long-term success in any type of program that encourages permanent change. Staying sober is not just about abstinence from drugs and alcohol–it is about addressing the emotional underlying issues. It is also about learning healthy habits and embracing a new life, free from substances. Some sober living homes offer 1 to 3-month-long programs while others offer 12 months or 18-month-long programs.

There are daily chores, therapy, clinical groups, life skills groups, free time, exercise, and recreation. In the evenings, the residents participate in outside events, the local young people’s recovery community, 12-Step meetings, and fun group activities. The managers and directors spend a great deal of time with each house member, checking in with them, discussing their goals, fears, and decisions.

This personal connection can make all the difference in the world when it comes to learning to live a healthy lifestyle in sobriety. Established structured sober living provides a distraction-free environment without having to pass by the dealer’s house, endure toxic relationships, or be tempted to party. Learning to be self-sufficient is a key component of any effective sober living. However, it is important to do this step-by-step while helping people safely practice new skills. Additionally, a strong peer community and staff keep them accountable without drugs or alcohol.

This formal treatment is helpful, as addressing mental health is our key focus. While this is a step in the right direction, again, for Answer House residents, this model is generally not sufficient. An important feature of sober living rehab aftercare is the hands-on support from professionals who have years of experience in the field. Answer House directors and managers are sober and in recovery themselves. This allows them to impart valuable advice and support to young men currently going through the houses.

Since learning this, he has made it a priority to share this new way of living with young men who are struggling as he did. We believe that the cessation of drugs and alcohol is only a start, a mere foundation. With almost 4 decades of experience we’ve fine-tuned a process that caters to each individual’s long-term success, far beyond our doors.
